Chapter 10 - The Last Bite

Before Robert could even beg Amber to stay, the heavy mahogany doors of the private dining room swung wide open.

Six federal agents in dark windbreakers walked into the warm, golden light of The Capital Grille. They didn't hesitate. Two agents grabbed Robert by the arms, violently spinning him around and clicking cold steel handcuffs over the wrists of his tailored charcoal suit. Two other agents immediately arrested Amber, who kicked and screamed hysterically in her emerald dress as she was dragged away.

The fifty guests sat in complete, awestruck silence, watching the ruthless, arrogant patriarch be reduced to a weeping, pathetic criminal in a matter of seconds.

"Julia, please!" Robert sobbed, tears streaming down his graying face as he was dragged toward the door. "I'm sorry! I'll do anything! Jason, help me!"

Jason didn't even look at him. He poured himself another glass of bourbon.

Julia Bennett watched her ex-husband disappear into the hallway, facing twenty years in a federal penitentiary. She smoothed the skirt of her elegant navy evening dress, her pearl earrings catching the light. She picked up her heavy silver knife and fork, returning to her plate as if the trash had simply been taken out.

She took a final, incredibly satisfying bite of her steak, chewing perfectly as the room erupted into cheers.

If your partner tried to frame you for their crimes, would you have the patience to sit through a dinner party just to watch them fall?
