Chapter 10 - The Ultimate Consequence

"Mom, please!" Daniel sobbed hysterically, dropping his phone onto the marble floor. "She's my wife! You can't throw us out! I'll make her apologize!"

Margaret looked at her son. She saw the exact same cowardice she had witnessed for five years, only now, it was fueled by absolute panic instead of apathy.

"I am not throwing you out, Daniel," Margaret stated smoothly, pulling the heavy, golden master keys from the black envelope. "You are more than welcome to stay for the entire week."

Daniel’s face lit up with a pathetic glimmer of hope.

"But Vanessa is leaving right now," Margaret continued, her voice a freezing, lethal blade. "So you have a choice to make, Daniel. You can go upstairs to the standard room overlooking the dumpster and spend your birthday completely alone. Or you can grab your suitcase and walk out those doors with the woman who isolated you from your own mother."

Daniel completely froze. He looked at his weeping, disgraced wife, and then he looked at the mother he had so brutally taken for granted. He was completely paralyzed, trapped in the agonizing nightmare of his own making.

Margaret didn't wait for his answer. She didn't shed a single tear for him.

She turned her back on her toxic son and his screaming wife. With absolute, breathtaking grace, she walked away, her heels clicking sharply against the polished marble as she headed toward her private, secured elevator.

She had survived the absolute worst betrayal imaginable and emerged completely, undeniably victorious.
