Chapter 17 - the desperate plea
"I had to do it, Luca!" Marcus sobbed hysterically, dropping to his knees on the expensive Persian rug. "Vanguard threatened my family! They said they would kill my wife if I didn't set up the laundering accounts! I had no choice!"
Maya looked down at the weeping man, feeling a momentary pang of human sympathy, but her fierce protective instinct for the orphans quickly silenced it.
"If they threatened your family, you should have come to me," Luca stated coldly, entirely devoid of pity. "Instead, you chose to betray everything we built. You chose to sacrifice innocent children to save yourself."
Luca pulled his phone from his pocket, tossing it onto the floor in front of Marcus. "While you were driving here tonight, my cyber-team completely drained the Vanguard accounts. We seized every single dollar you laundered and returned it to the foundation."
