Chapter 2 - The Silent Defiance

For a moment, the only sound in the brightly lit kitchen was the low hum of the industrial refrigerators.

Maya stared at the mountain of food. She knew exactly who those meals were meant for. For weeks, the estate staff had been preparing for this specific charity gala. The leftover, untouched premium meals were supposed to be boxed up and immediately delivered to the St. Jude Children’s Shelter across town.

Maya had grown up in the foster system. She knew the hollow, agonizing ache of going to sleep with an empty stomach. She knew that tonight, dozens of little kids were waiting by the window for this exact delivery.

She tightened her grip on the metal ladle. Her heart hammered against her ribs, terrified of losing her job, but her moral compass completely overpowered her fear.

Maya slowly looked up, meeting the harsh, arrogant glare of the billionaire’s sister.

"I can't do that, Miss Moretti," Maya whispered nervously, her voice shaking but her feet firmly planted on the tiles.

Victoria’s eyes widened in sheer outrage. A lowly maid was openly defying her.

"Excuse me?" Victoria hissed, stepping aggressively into Maya’s personal space. "You are hired help. You will drag these containers to the dumpster out back right now, or I will make sure you are blacklisted from every estate in this city. Do you understand me?"
