Chapter 2 - The Fifty-Dollar Bill

The cinematic realism of the suffocating, paralyzing tension gripped the entire Thanksgiving dining room.

Sitting across from Claire was her father, Richard. He was in his early sixties, with neatly combed silver-gray hair, wearing a dark business suit and a burgundy tie. Instead of defending his daughter, he leaned forward, deciding to join in on the cruel, high-society mockery.

With a deeply dismissive, arrogant smile, Richard pulled a crisp fifty-dollar bill from his expensive leather wallet.

He didn't hand it to Claire respectfully. He aggressively slid the money across the polished wooden table, stopping it right next to her dinner plate.

"Here," her father sneered, his voice dripping with condescension. "Buy yourself a better mop, Claire. Maybe if you scrub the toilets fast enough, they’ll promote you to head janitor."

Vanessa, Claire’s sister, sat next to her father. Wearing an elegant champagne-colored evening dress, her long wavy blonde hair cascaded perfectly down her shoulders. She let out a soft, theatrical sigh.

"Dad, be nice," Vanessa mocked lightly, gently swirling her expensive red wine. "Someone has to clean up after Ethan’s surgeries. We should be proud she found a job she's qualified for."

A tight close-up captured Claire’s face. She didn't physically flinch. The hurtful words landed, but they didn't break her. She looked down at the fifty-dollar bill resting next to her plate.

Slowly, with absolute, terrifying calm, Claire reached out her hand. She didn't pick up the money. She gently pushed the bill back across the polished table, sliding it directly back to her arrogant father.

"Keep it," Claire replied smoothly, her dark eyes locking onto his with a cold, incredibly sharp gaze. "I think you're going to need it a lot more than I do."

👉 Claire's father scoffed at the threat, entirely oblivious to the apocalyptic financial ruin sitting just hours away.
