Chapter 8 - The Father's Ruin

The cinematic realism of the absolute, crushing betrayal completely paralyzed the arrogant patriarch.
"What the hell are you talking about?" Richard demanded, his voice shaking slightly as he adjusted his burgundy tie. "My real estate firm is worth fifty million dollars!"
"Your firm was worth fifty million dollars," Claire corrected ruthlessly, completely devoid of human empathy. "Until you made a massive, highly illegal gamble on the downtown commercial development project. You took out thirty million in high-interest bridge loans, fully expecting the city to re-zone the property."
Richard’s jaw literally unhinged. The blood violently drained from his face, leaving him looking like a terrified ghost.
"How... how do you know about the loans?" Richard choked out, completely stripped of his pride and his fake elite status.
"Because my holding company bought the debt from the private equity firm last week," Claire explained smoothly, completely commanding the room. "And I didn't bribe the city council to approve the re-zoning like you did. The project failed. The loans are officially in default."
Margaret let out an apocalyptic shriek, grabbing her husband’s arm. "Richard! What is she saying?! Are we bankrupt?!"
"I am officially calling in the debt, Dad," Claire announced flawlessly, staring dead into her father's panicking eyes. "My corporate attorneys will be filing the foreclosure paperwork on Monday morning. They are going to seize your firm, they are going to seize your bank accounts, and they are going to seize this massive, ridiculous mansion."
