Chapter 5 - The Apocalyptic Truth

The cinematic realism of the suffocating, paralyzing tension gripped the Thanksgiving table.
Margaret physical staggered backward, clutching her pearl necklace. "What? Evelyn, what are you talking about? The Vanguard Medical Group is owned by a private corporate trust. Ethan is their top surgeon!"
"The trust is a proxy, you absolute fool," Evelyn stated clinically, entirely devoid of human mercy. "Claire owns the trust. She bought the Vanguard Medical Group two years ago. She doesn't clean the hospital, Margaret. She owns every single brick of it."
The heavy crystal wineglass in Vanessa’s hand slipped from her fingers. It crashed loudly against the polished wooden table, spilling dark red wine across the expensive white linen.
The relatives gasped in pure, unfiltered horror.
A tight close-up captured Ethan. The arrogant, confident smile completely melted off his handsome face, violently replaced by sheer, unadulterated terror. He physically stumbled, grabbing the back of Claire's chair just to keep himself standing.
"That... that's impossible," Ethan choked out, his voice cracking into a high-pitched, pathetic squeal. He stared down at Claire, who was still sitting perfectly calm in her black blazer. "Claire, tell them she's lying. You can't possibly own Vanguard."
A tight close-up captured Claire. She didn't scream in triumph. She didn't gloat. She slowly turned her head and looked directly at Ethan with a cold, incredibly sharp, apex-predator gaze.
"I own the hospital you work at, Ethan," Claire confirmed, her voice flawlessly smooth and terrifyingly quiet. "I sign your paychecks. And I review the malpractice audits."
