Chapter 11 - the unexpected invitation

Three years passed peacefully in the quiet suburban neighborhood. Evan was now sixteen, a deeply disciplined, athletic, and fiercely intelligent young man. He had completely outgrown the frail, frightened boy he used to be. Under his father's relentless, silent tutelage in their home garage, Evan had developed terrifyingly flawless martial arts technique and a calm, unshakable composure.

Damon continued his quiet life as a maintenance supervisor. He found profound peace in his routine, entirely content to leave the violent ghosts of his military past buried forever.

One evening, Walter Briggs, the aging Marine veteran who had become a close family friend, stopped by the garage during their training session. He wasn't carrying coffee this time; he was holding a heavy, sealed envelope.

"Damon," Walter said, his weathered voice carrying an unusual, grave tension. "An old contact from the Pentagon reached out to me. They are looking for you."
