Chapter 8 - The Silent Respect

The chaotic, violent energy completely evaporated from the gymnasium.
Blake scrambled off the mat in utter disgrace, grabbing his gym bag and running out the back door, entirely terrified of the legal nightmare awaiting him. The parents in the room quietly began packing up their children's gear, completely in awe of the man in the faded work clothes.
Damon didn't gloat. He simply adjusted his grey t-shirt and guided Evan toward the main exit.
Walter Briggs walked over, stopping exactly three feet away from Damon.
The two men looked at each other. They didn't need to speak to understand the profound, unspoken bond between them. They both knew the weight of the dark, violent world they had survived.
"SEAL Team Six?" Walter asked quietly, keeping his voice low enough that the parents couldn't hear.
Damon hesitated for a fraction of a second, his blue-gray eyes completely guarded. Then, he offered a single, barely perceptible nod.
"My son doesn't know," Damon whispered, looking down at Evan. "I want him to have a normal life."
Walter nodded slowly, absolute, overwhelming respect shining in his weathered eyes. "He's a lucky kid to have a father like you. Thank you for your service, brother."
Damon returned the nod, entirely grateful that his secret was safe with a fellow ghost.
