Chapter 12 - the ghost's dilemma

Damon took the heavy envelope from Walter, walking away from the blue training mats so Evan couldn't hear their conversation. He broke the wax seal, his eyes scanning the highly classified document.
"It's a specialized advisory role," Walter explained quietly. "An elite tactical unit is deploying to Eastern Europe for a hostage rescue. The target compound perfectly matches the exact schematics of a facility you successfully breached twelve years ago. They need your operational knowledge."
Damon's jaw locked tightly. He looked over his shoulder at Evan, who was practicing his strikes on the heavy bag with beautiful, robotic efficiency.
"I left that life, Walter," Damon whispered, his voice vibrating with absolute, unyielding finality. "I swore I would never leave my son again."
"I know, brother," Walter nodded respectfully. "But the commander specifically requested you. He said there are three American children held in that compound. He thinks your tactical insight is the only way to get them out alive."

Damon completely froze. The mention of innocent children trapped in a war zone hit the absolute core of his protective instincts. He looked at his own son, perfectly safe in their garage. The agonizing moral conflict threatened to tear his peaceful world apart.
