Chapter 14 - the tactical return

Damon packed a small, unmarked duffel bag. He hugged Evan fiercely, promising to return in exactly two weeks. He didn't wear a uniform; he arrived at the classified military airstrip wearing his faded work clothes, blending seamlessly into the background.
He was flown to a covert command center in Europe, where he was ushered into a massive briefing room. A dozen elite, highly decorated tactical operators sat around a holographic projection of the target compound.
When the quiet, forty-five-year-old maintenance man walked into the room, a few of the younger operatives scoffed. They didn't recognize the legend standing before them.
"This is our consultant?" a young, arrogant lieutenant whispered to his commander. "He looks like a janitor."
The commander, a seasoned veteran who had served alongside Damon, immediately slammed his hand on the table. "Shut your mouth, Lieutenant," he barked. "This man is the only reason half the command structure in this room is still breathing today. You will listen to every single word he says."
