Chapter 13 - the son's blessing

Later that night, Damon sat alone at the kitchen table, staring blankly at the classified documents spread out before him. The heavy silence of the house was suffocating.

Evan walked quietly into the kitchen, grabbing a glass of water. He saw the intense, haunted look in his father's eyes—a look he hadn't seen since the day at the dojo three years ago. Evan didn't retreat; he walked over and sat directly across from his father.

"Mr. Briggs didn't just come by to watch us spar, did he?" Evan asked, his voice steady and calm.

Damon looked at his son, realizing that the frail boy he had fought to protect was now a strong, incredibly perceptive young man. Damon decided to finally honor that maturity.

"The military needs my help, Evan," Damon confessed softly, pushing the redacted papers toward his son. "It's a rescue mission. There are children involved. But I promised myself I would never go back to that violent world. I promised I would just be your dad."

Evan looked at the papers, then looked directly into his father's eyes with profound, overwhelming respect.

"You taught me that true strength is only valuable when it's used to protect those who cannot protect themselves," Evan repeated his father's greatest lesson. "If you can save those kids, you have to go, Dad. I'll be perfectly fine here."
