Chapter 18 - the ghost retires

When the tactical strike team returned to the covert command base, they didn't celebrate wildly. They walked directly into the briefing room and stood in absolute, rigid silence.

The arrogant young lieutenant, who had mocked Damon's faded work clothes just two days ago, stepped forward. He looked at the quiet, forty-five-year-old maintenance man, his eyes shining with pure, unadulterated awe and deep respect.

The lieutenant brought his heels together and offered a crisp, flawless military salute. "You saved our lives today, sir," the lieutenant said quietly. "And you saved those kids. We would have walked into a slaughterhouse without you."

Damon didn't gloat or demand an apology. He simply nodded, returning the salute with the quiet grace of a true warrior.

The commander approached, holding out a sealed envelope containing a massive advisory fee and a prestigious medal of honor.

Damon pushed the envelope gently back across the table. "I didn't do it for the money or the medals," Damon whispered softly. "I did it because it was the right thing to do. My tour is permanently over. I'm going home to my son."
