Chapter 9 - The Father's Truth

The parking lot was quiet, illuminated by the soft glow of the streetlights.
Evan stopped walking. He looked up at Damon, his blue-gray eyes entirely free of fear for the first time in his life. He wasn't looking at a tired maintenance man anymore; he was looking at an absolute superhero.
"Dad..." Evan whispered, his voice trembling slightly. "How did you do that? How did you beat him without even trying?"
Damon knelt down on the asphalt until he was perfectly eye-level with his son. He didn't want to lie to him anymore, but he couldn't burden him with the violent truths of war.
"Before you were born, Evan," Damon said softly, placing his large, calloused hands gently on his son's shoulders, "I had a very difficult job. I had to learn how to protect myself, and how to protect the people I loved."
"Were you... were you in the military?" Evan asked, piecing it together.
Damon smiled gently. "I was. But that part of my life is over. The only job I care about now is being your father."
Evan didn't need to know the details. He didn't need to know about the covert operations or the classified missions. He just needed to know that the man standing in front of him would tear the world apart to keep him safe.
Evan lunged forward, wrapping his thin arms tightly around Damon’s massive neck.
"I love you, Dad," Evan whispered, burying his face in his father's shoulder.
