Chapter 9 - The Reclaimed Throne

I looked down at the white tablecloth. Grant’s plate of expensive food sat completely untouched next to the fraudulent nine-hundred-million-dollar contract.

I reached behind my back and slowly untied the knot of my stiff white waitress apron. I let it fall to the marble floor, completely discarding the invisible servant persona I had meticulously crafted.

An older FBI agent, the lead investigator who had received my massive data dump, stepped back into the room. He looked at me, his eyes filled with profound, overwhelming respect.

"You did incredible work, Miss Sterling," the agent said softly. "We've been trying to build a solid RICO case against Maddox for three years. You dismantled his entire global network in one night. Your father would be incredibly proud of you."

Tears of pure, agonizing relief finally spilled down my cheeks. The unbearable weight I had been carrying was finally gone.

"Thank you, Agent," I whispered, wiping my face.

"The board of directors at Sterling Enterprises has already been notified of the fraud," the agent added with a small smile. "With Maddox's assets frozen and his shares seized, the company legally reverts to the primary heir."

I wasn't just a forensic accountant anymore. I was the rightful, undisputed owner of a billion-dollar corporate empire.
