Chapter 18 - the prison letter

The maximum-security state penitentiary was a bleak, freezing, and soul-crushing fortress of concrete and steel. Inside a tiny, sterile visiting booth, the younger sister sat alone behind reinforced glass.

Her flawless blonde hair was gone, replaced by a harsh, rough prison haircut. Her custom-made white strapless wedding dress was long forgotten, replaced by a coarse, faded orange jumpsuit.

She stared blankly at the metal table, consumed entirely by a bitter, venomous hatred that burned like acid in her chest. She had lost her freedom, her social status, her multi-billion-dollar inheritance, and her entire future.

A prison guard slid a small, plain white envelope across the stainless steel slot. It was mail from the outside world—a rare occurrence for an inmate locked away for attempted murder.

The disgraced sister ripped the envelope open with shaking, manicured-free fingers, expecting a notice of legal appeal or a message from a sympathetic former socialite friend.

Instead, she pulled out a single sheet of cheap paper containing only two handwritten sentences penned by Thomas on Caroline's behalf:

"The empire is thriving, and the true heir sits firmly upon her throne. Enjoy the next thirty years in the dirt."

The inmate shrieked in absolute fury, tearing the paper to shreds as the prison guards rushed forward to pin her to the concrete floor.
