Caroline stood in the center of her glass-walled executive office, her brown eyes completely devoid of panic. The sudden disappearance of her most trusted ally was a devastating psychological blow, but she refused to let her enemies see her bleed.
A heavily encrypted email bypassed the corporate firewall, appearing directly on her private terminal. It contained a single, high-resolution photograph. Thomas was chained to a steel chair in a dark, concrete room, bruised but staring defiantly at the camera.
The message attached was brief and chilling: 'You destroyed our financial networks. We have taken your greatest weapon. Transfer ownership of the European tech patents by midnight, or your lawyer dies.'
The sender was an anonymous international crime syndicate known as The Crimson Hand. They were ruthless data brokers and weapons smugglers who had lost billions when Caroline purged the corrupt board of directors years ago.
