Chapter 49 - extinguishing hope

Weeks after Marcus's horrific downfall, Caroline returned to the federal maximum-security prison. She walked down the cold concrete hallway, carrying an unshakable calmness and authority.

When her sister was escorted into the visitation room, her arrogance and aggression had completely vanished. She was gaunt, her eyes dark-circled and filled with utter despair. The news about Marcus had reached her ears.

"What did you do to him?" she hissed weakly through the tempered glass, tears streaming down her face. "You took everything from me again. You are a cold-blooded monster, Caroline!"

Caroline looked at her enemy emotionlessly. "I took nothing. It was your own greed and jealousy that destroyed your life. Marcus is currently hiding from the FBI on charges of financial fraud."

She pressed a newspaper against the glass, showing a photo of Marcus being escorted away. "There is no one left to save you. Enjoy the rest of your life in this dark and lonely place. This is the last time we will ever meet."
