Chapter 5 - The Unveiling

Caroline didn't flinch at her sister's terrified, breathless accusation.
She stood perfectly still in the center of the luxury ballroom, her cheap, faded light blue hospital gown a stark, glaring contrast to the hundreds of expensive designer suits and gowns surrounding her. She looked directly at her younger sister, her dark eyes completely devoid of any familial warmth.
"I'm deeply sorry to disappoint you on your special day," Caroline replied calmly, her voice dripping with an incredibly sharp, surgical sarcasm.
The Father took a desperate step forward, his hands reaching out, tears pouring completely down his aged face. "Caroline... how? They told me you were in the car... they told me there was nothing left..."
"I wasn't in the car when it exploded, Dad," Caroline said softly, her voice softening only for him.
She slowly raised her bruised, bare hands toward her own throat.
Moving with deliberate, careful precision, Caroline slowly grabbed the edge of the thick, white medical bandages wrapped tightly around her neck. She pulled the medical tape away, entirely unwrapping the thick gauze and letting it fall completely to the polished marble floor.
The wealthy guests gasped in collective, genuine horror.
Exposed completely to the bright light of the crystal chandeliers was Caroline’s bare neck. But it wasn't burned.
Wrapping entirely around her throat were massive, incredibly dark, deep purple ligature marks. They were the undeniable, horrific, and absolute physical scars of someone who had survived a violent, brutal, and determined strangulation attempt.

"Someone tried to choke me to death in my own driveway before they put me in the driver's seat and pushed my car off the cliff," Caroline stated, her cold eyes locking back onto her trembling sister.
