Chapter 1 - The Last Coins

Arthur Vance watched from his lonely booth as the young mother carefully separated quarters from dimes in her palm, counting them for the third time like they were precious stones.

It was Christmas Eve outside a small, frost-covered diner in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Arthur was a fifty-nine-year-old millionaire construction titan who had spent his life believing every problem could be fixed with money. But tonight, sitting alone in a booth with a cold cup of coffee, he felt entirely powerless.

Three years ago, his wife Caroline had passed away, leaving his grand house silent and empty. He had refused his sister’s invitation to spend the holiday with family, unable to bear the laughter of happy children.

Then the young mother had walked in with a little girl of about seven, both wearing frayed coats.

She ordered a single children's pancake plate and a glass of water. When the food arrived, she cut it into bite-sized pieces and pushed it toward her daughter.

"Go ahead, sweetheart. Eat while it's warm," she whispered.

"What about you, Mommy?" the little girl asked.

The mother smiled, brushing hair from the child's forehead. "I already ate earlier, honey. I'm not hungry."

Arthur knew she was lying. He had seen the pennies in her hand. She had given her only meal to her child, keeping nothing for herself.
