Chapter 52 - the ultimatum
Lily calmly opened the heavy envelope. Inside was a formal subpoena to testify before a senate committee, accompanied by an implicit ultimatum from Hayes: hand over the management rights of the foundation, or face fabricated tax evasion charges.
Clara stepped into the office, placing a thick dossier on the mahogany desk. The face of the fierce mother was as sharp and cold as ice. She had accompanied Lily through countless storms, and knew perfectly well the level of danger of the enemy this time.
"Hayes has bribed more than half of the committee members," Clara reported, her deep voice containing cold indignation. "He has prepared a dirty media campaign to smear our family's honor before the hearing even takes place."
Lily stood up, her dark eyes flashing with a razor-sharp, terrifying glint. The Vance women had never backed down before any extortionist, no matter how immense a political power facade that person hid behind.

"We never negotiate with despicable corrupt men," Lily declared firmly. "Turn over every single hidden corner of Hayes's life for me. We will completely and utterly destroy him right now."
