Chapter 5 - Inside the Warm Haven
Within ten minutes, their belongings were back inside the small apartment. The landlord had scurried away like a frightened rat, leaving Clara and Lily in the warm, heated hallway.
Clara stood by the kitchen counter, trembling as she looked at the older man who had just performed a miracle.
"I... I can't accept this," Clara whispered, fresh tears filling her eyes. "It's too much money. How could I ever pay you back?"
"You don't owe me a dime," Arthur said gently, taking off his wet gloves. He looked around the modest, clean apartment. It was sparse, decorated with a tiny, handmade paper star hanging on the wall. "My name is Arthur Vance."
Clara gasped, her hands flying to her mouth. "Arthur Vance? The construction developer? You built the new medical center downtown."
"I did," Arthur nodded, pulling up a chair and sitting down, gesturing for Clara and Lily to sit as well. "Now, Clara, tell me something. Where is your husband? Why are you raising a seven-year-old completely alone in this city?"
Clara’s shoulders slumped. The guarded wall she had built around herself finally crumbled.
"He left us a year ago," she whispered, looking down at her hands. "When the medical bills for my mother's cancer treatments piled up, he said he didn't sign up to be a caretaker or a father. He cleaned out our bank accounts and moved to Florida with another woman."
Arthur felt a sharp pang in his chest. Desertion. Betrayal. Leaving someone you love to drown in the dark. He knew that pain intimately.
"And your mother?" Arthur asked softly.
"She passed away six months ago," Clara cried softly, pulling Lily into her lap. "I've been working two jobs at a local laundry facility and cleaning offices at night just to keep a roof over Lily's head. But my hours were cut this week... and I couldn't make the rent."
