Chapter 6 - An Empty House No More

Arthur sat in silence for a long moment, listening to the wind howling against the apartment window.
For three years, he had lived in a massive, sprawling estate on the edge of town. A house with five bedrooms, a grand piano nobody played, and dining tables that only ever collected dust. He had used work as a shield to keep the grief away. But tonight, watching this brave mother protect her child against impossible odds, he realized something profound.
His money wasn't meant to sit in a bank account. It was meant to create life, warmth, and safety.
"Clara," Arthur said, his voice unusually thick with emotion. "I live in a very large house. Too large. It has rooms that haven't been opened in years."
Clara looked up, confused. "Mr. Vance, what are you saying?"
"I'm saying that tomorrow is Christmas," Arthur smiled softly, a genuine warmth reaching his eyes for the first time in three years. "And my house is unbearably lonely. I have an estate manager's cottage in the back of my property. It’s fully furnished, warm, safe, and it has a backyard for Lily to play in."
Clara shook her head rapidly. "Oh, no, Mr. Vance! I couldn't possibly—I'm not looking for charity!"
"It's not charity," Arthur interrupted gently, leaning forward. "My construction company needs a reliable, honest person to manage our community outreach foundation office. It pays a very generous salary, with full health benefits. And as for the cottage... I need someone to help me bring some life back into that cold house. I need a family."
Lily looked up from her mother's lap, her big eyes wide with wonder. "Mommy, does he mean we get to have a real Christmas tree?"
