Chapter 3 - Locked Out in the Snow

"I told you, Clara! Rent was due yesterday!" the landlord barked, his voice carrying sharply across the quiet, snow-dusted street.
Clara, the young mother, rushed up the steps, shielding her frightened seven-year-old daughter, Lily, behind her coat.
"Mr. Henderson, please!" Clara sobbed, her voice cracking in the freezing wind. "My employer delayed my paycheck until the day after Christmas! I begged you for three days! It's Christmas Eve, look at my daughter!"
"I don't care about your daughter or the holiday!" the landlord snarled, shoving the cardboard box down the snowy steps. "You’ve been skating on thin ice for months. Consider this your eviction. Find somewhere else to freeze!"
With a loud bang, the front door slammed shut and the deadbolt clicked into place.
Clara sank to her knees in the wet slush, pulling little Lily into her arms. The child buried her face in her mother's chest, crying softly. "Mommy, where are we going to sleep? Are we sleeping in the car?"
Clara couldn't answer. She just stroked her daughter's hair, tears freezing on her own cheeks as she stared up at the dark, unforgiving sky.
Arthur Vance watched from the shadows of a brick wall, his chest tightening with a sharp, burning fury he hadn't felt in decades.
Money. He had millions of dollars sitting in silent bank accounts, while a innocent mother and a starving child were thrown into the snow over a few hundred dollars of rent.
