Chapter 4 - The Fire of the Past

Gabriel slowly turned his head, his piercing gray eyes locking directly onto Elena.

The beautiful young housekeeper was pressing herself against the mahogany wall, trembling violently in her black-and-white maid uniform. She looked absolutely terrified, desperately trying to avoid his intense, calculating gaze.

To understand the absolute, bone-chilling horror currently paralyzing the mafia boss, one had to look back exactly seven years ago to the worst night of Gabriel's entire life.

Gabriel hadn't always been the untouchable king of New York. Seven years ago, a rival cartel had aggressively ambushed his modest safe house. They trapped his beloved wife, Sofia, inside the house and set it completely on fire. Gabriel had arrived too late. The entire building had burned to the ground.

He had lost his wife, and he had lost his unborn child.

The only survivor pulled from the ashes was a heavily burned, severely injured stray black puppy that Gabriel had recently adopted off the street. Gabriel had spent tens of thousands of dollars on veterinary surgery to save the puppy, renaming him Caesar and turning him into the most lethal guard dog in the city.

But before the fire, before the trauma, Gabriel and Sofia had a secret name for the sweet, playful stray puppy. They had called him Dante.
