Chapter 42 - the venomous whisper

Before Maya could even analyze the ancient coin, the massive digital monitors in her executive office violently flickered. The highly encrypted security grid experienced a brutal, localized override. The screens turned pitch black, followed by the appearance of a chilling, distorted audio waveform.
"Don Gabriel thought he buried the debts of the old world," a raspy, deeply accented voice echoed through the pristine office. It was speaking the exact same rare Sicilian dialect that her parents had secretly cherished. "Pero blood debts do not die with old men. I am Dante's true heir, and we are here to collect."
Maya did not flinch. Her dark gray eyes remained perfectly calm, radiating the terrifying, absolute composure of a queen who had crushed countless empires before. The caller claimed that old rivals owed his family millions, and he was here to seize the estate as payment.
