Chapter 8 - The Hunted Queen

"Because they found us," Elena whispered coldly, the intense fear in her voice paralyzing the entire room.
Gabriel stopped breathing. The air in the ultra-luxurious mansion was completely sucked out.
"Who found you?" Gabriel demanded, instantly transitioning back into a terrifying, highly protective apex predator.
"The Marcone family," Elena explained, her voice trembling violently. "A week ago, one of their soldiers recognized me at the grocery store. They followed me back to our apartment. They left a black rose on Maya's bed. They are coming to finish the job they started seven years ago."
Gabriel’s blood ran completely ice-cold. The Marcone family was the exact rival syndicate that had burned down his house. They hadn't just been trying to kill him; they actively wanted to completely eradicate his entire bloodline.
"I didn't have anywhere else to go, Gabriel," Elena wept pathetically, completely humiliated. "I knew this mansion was the most heavily guarded fortress in New York. I took the maid job because it was the only way I could hide Maya behind your bulletproof walls."
She had walked directly back into the lion's den because the lion was the only monster terrifying enough to protect her cub.
