Chapter 2 - The Red Silk Disguise

To understand the absolute, volcanic tension in this grand hallway, you had to understand exactly why I was standing there in the rain.

Ten years ago, my father—a brilliant, highly respected security chief for the city's most powerful corporate empire—died in a horrific, fiery car crash. The police ruled it a tragic brake failure. I was seventeen, entirely orphaned, and left with absolutely nothing but a massive stack of unpaid bills and a burning suspicion that my father had been murdered.

I spent the next decade working grueling, exhausting delivery jobs during the day just to survive. But at night, I trained. I mastered Krav Maga, Muay Thai, and close-quarters combat. I refused to be a victim.

Tonight was the ten-year anniversary of my father's death.

I had been dressed to go to a quiet memorial dinner alone, wearing my favorite red silk dress. But my boss at the bakery had frantically begged me to deliver a massive, five-tier cake to the Sterling estate because his driver had quit. The storm was raging, the rain was pouring, and I desperately needed the extra cash to pay my heating bill.

I had thrown a cheap raincoat over my red silk dress and driven through the torrential downpour.

I didn't want to be at this luxury mansion. I didn't care about the crystal chandeliers or the elite, snobby guests sipping champagne. I just wanted to drop off the cake and go mourn my father in peace.
