I was sitting on the quiet patio of the estate when Maya's call came through. The moment she detailed the absolute, violent audacity of the Apex Coalition, the peaceful retiree vanished entirely. The ruthless, calculating security director was resurrected.
I immediately activated the deep, subterranean safe room beneath the estate, a high-tech command center Dominic and I had built decades ago. Maya arrived via heavily armored helicopter an hour later, stepping into the bunker with eyes as cold as ice.
"They want our primary European patents, Mom," Maya reported, tossing the mercenary's encrypted phone onto the metal table. "They have bribed the international regulatory board. If we don't transfer the rights, they plan to destroy our infrastructure."
I looked at my brilliant daughter, feeling a surge of immense, overwhelming pride. "They think they can intimidate us with street thugs and corrupt politicians. They forgot that we literally built our empire by crushing absolute monsters."
