Chapter 5 - The Terrified Fiancée

I stood up slowly from my defensive stance, my breathing completely steady. I didn't cower under the intense, heavy gaze of the city's most powerful man.
I looked straight at Dominic without an ounce of fear.
"My father," I answered, my voice firm and absolute.
Dominic’s jaw clenched so tightly the muscles visibly ticked beneath his stubble. "What was your father's name?"
"Arthur Hayes," I replied coldly. "He died ten years ago."
The name hit the grand hall like a physical shockwave. Ten years ago, Arthur Hayes had been Dominic’s closest mentor. He was the man who had taught Dominic everything about security, loyalty, and survival before his horrific car crash. Dominic had spent a decade believing Arthur's only daughter had moved overseas and vanished.
Down on the marble floor, Vanessa struggled to sit up, wiping the cake icing off her plunging blue gown.
When she heard the name "Arthur Hayes," she froze.
Vanessa’s angry, arrogant expression suddenly evaporated, violently replaced by pure, unadulterated terror. She looked at the silver pendant resting against my red dress. She recognized the crest. She knew exactly what that necklace meant.
"Dominic, shut up," Vanessa hissed, a terrified, desperate whisper tearing from her throat. "She's a scammer! Don't listen to her! Have your guards throw her in the street right now!"
