Chapter 13 - the hidden ledger

Dante knew that Marcus, despite all his despicable treachery, was a meticulous and calculating man. If he truly owed the Rossi family millions, there would be a physical record.
He immediately summoned his top financial analysts and cybersecurity experts, ordering them to tear through every single one of Marcus's confiscated digital files. But it wasn't the seasoned experts who found the crucial key to the war.
It was Elena. She walked into the quiet study, her blonde hair catching the firelight, her eyes sharp, clear, and completely devoid of the terror that once held her captive.
"When he kept me locked in the basement of that warehouse," Elena said quietly, her voice entirely steady, "he had a small red leather ledger. He never let it out of his sight. He called it his ultimate insurance policy."
Dante’s dark eyes widened. His men hadn't found a red ledger in Marcus's belongings.
He immediately dispatched his most elite, heavily armed extraction team to completely dismantle the burnt, charred remains of the old warehouse. Hours later, they returned with a soot-covered, fireproof lockbox.
Inside, perfectly preserved, was the red leather ledger.
Dante opened it, his eyes scanning the handwritten pages. The cinematic tension peaked. It wasn't just a record of gambling debts; it was a comprehensive, devastating list of the Rossi family's corrupt politicians, massive money laundering fronts, and illegal global arms shipments.
