Chapter 6 - The Hostage

Dante dropped to his knees in the doorway, his massive chest heaving as tears of pure, unadulterated shock flooded his eyes.
"Elena," Dante choked out, his voice cracking with profound, overwhelming grief.
Elena didn't run toward him. She physically scrambled backward against the headboard, her eyes wide with sheer, suffocating terror. She threw her hands up defensively, shaking violently.
"Please!" Elena cried out, her voice raspy and broken. "I didn't try to escape! I swear! Don't let him hurt my family! I did everything he asked!"
Dante froze. The cinematic tension was absolutely paralyzing.
"Elena, it's me," Dante whispered, holding his empty hands up to show he was unarmed. "I'm not going to hurt you. Who did this to you?"
Elena stared at him, confusion warring with the deep psychological trauma. "You... you didn't order this?"
"Order what?" Dante demanded gently, slowly standing up.
"Marcus," Elena sobbed, breaking down completely. "He pulled me out of the fire two years ago. He locked me in the basement of the old warehouse, and then he moved me here. He told me you orchestrated the fire to kill me so you could marry the Miami cartel heiress. He said if I ever tried to escape, you would slaughter my parents."
The absolute, horrific magnitude of the betrayal hit Dante like a physical bullet to the chest.
