Chapter 1 - The Ruined Masterpiece

The grand luxury ballroom of the Blackwell estate was usually a place of hushed whispers, clinking crystal, and sophisticated elegance. Tonight, however, it had transformed into a theater of breathless, suffocating silence. The towering, six-tier white-and-gold wedding cake—a custom masterpiece that had taken a team of French pastry chefs three days to assemble—lay in total ruins across the highly polished Italian marble floor. Chunks of delicate vanilla sponge, shattered sugar roses, and thick, messy slathers of buttercream frosting were scattered everywhere, looking like debris after a violent, glittering storm.

But the real storm was standing right in the center of the wreckage.

Celeste Vale, the soon-to-be wife of the city’s most feared and powerful man, stood trembling with absolute, unhinged rage. Her custom-fitted ivory silk gown was flawless, draped perfectly over her slender frame, but her face was twisted into a mask of ugly, venomous fury. She raised her hand, her massive diamond engagement ring catching the bright, blinding light of the crystal chandeliers above, and pointed a sharp, manicured finger straight down at the marble floor.

"Get that child out of my sight!" Celeste shrieked, her harsh, piercing voice echoing violently off the high, gilded ceilings.

The elite guests, wearing their finest bespoke tuxedos and designer evening gowns, froze in their tracks. The string quartet had abruptly stopped playing mid-note. No one in the massive room dared to breathe or even shift their weight.

On the ground, directly in the line of Celeste’s wrath, was a tiny three-year-old girl. Little Daisy sat amidst the ruined cake, wearing a cheap, faded pink cotton dress and little pink socks. A smear of golden frosting was stuck to her pale, tear-stained cheek. She was crying hysterically, her tiny hands shaking violently as she looked up at the terrifying, screaming woman towering over her.

Standing just inches away, paralyzed by the sheer horror of the moment, was Marisol. She wore a simple black and white maid’s uniform, her dark brown hair falling loosely from a messy updo, with a dusting of white baking flour staining her apron. Her heart hammered against her ribs.
