Chapter 13 - the heartbreaking truth

The next day, Marisol's detailed file lay neatly on Caleb's desk. He flipped through each page, his eyebrows furrowing tighter and tighter. An incredibly bitter truth was gradually appearing before his eyes.

Marisol was once a talented architecture student, but she had to drop out of school after her husband died in a tragic workplace accident. She had to shoulder all of his massive medical debt.

Little Daisy was born with chronic asthma, needing expensive medication to survive every month. Marisol worked three jobs simultaneously, from waitressing and cleaning to prepping food, just to exchange them for every single pill for her daughter.

Reading to the last line, Caleb felt a heavy weight in his chest. That resilient woman had hugged her daughter tightly, ready to take a beating for her child in front of hundreds of callous, wealthy people. Maternal love was truly magnificent.

He recalled little Daisy's brave, unwavering eyes when she pointed her finger straight at Celeste's face. The little girl possessed an extraordinary inner strength, exactly like her mother. Caleb pressed the call button on his encrypted desk phone.
