Chapter 15 - the unexpected offer

Caleb sat down on the worn-out sofa, observing the small but incredibly neat and clean room. He looked at the picture Daisy was drawing: a stick-figure family holding hands under a blazing sun.
"I've read your file, Marisol," Caleb got straight to the point, his eyes sincere. "I know you are facing financial difficulties and dealing with Daisy's illness. I want to make you a new job offer."
Marisol was surprised, her hands clasped together anxiously. "What kind of job, sir? I am just a server..."
"No, you are a great mother and a talented architecture student," Caleb interrupted. "The Blackwell Corporation is about to launch a residential project for low-income earners. I need someone like you to join the design team."
Marisol was stunned, not daring to believe her ears. She had abandoned her architectural dreams a long time ago to struggle for daily survival. "But... I haven't graduated. I have no practical experience. Why would you choose me?"
"Because I need people with heart, not just degrees," Caleb replied, smiling as he looked at little Daisy. "All of her medical expenses will be fully covered by the corporation. Do you accept?"
