Chapter 2 - A Mother's Shield

The initial shock finally broke, and Marisol’s maternal instincts violently hijacked her frozen body. She didn't care about the hundreds of wealthy eyes staring daggers into her back. She didn't care about the ruined masterpiece beneath her shoes. She only cared about the terrified sobs echoing from her three-year-old daughter.

Marisol dropped to her knees, the hard impact sending a painful jolt up her legs as they hit the cold marble floor. She reached out, her hands frantic and trembling, and pulled the weeping little girl tightly into her chest. She wrapped her arms completely around Daisy, curling her own body forward to act as a human shield against the intense, terrifying energy radiating from the furious bride.

"Shh, shh, I've got you," Marisol whispered frantically, her voice shaking as she pressed her cheek against the top of Daisy's head, getting frosting in her own brown hair. "Baby, are you hurt? Did anything hit you?"

Daisy just continued to sob, burying her wet, sticky face into the coarse fabric of Marisol’s black and white uniform, her tiny fingers gripping her mother’s apron with desperate, terrifying strength.

A few feet away, standing entirely motionless in the shadows cast by the sweeping grand staircase, was Caleb Blackwell.

He was a tall, strikingly handsome man in his early thirties, dressed in an impeccably tailored black tuxedo. But there was nothing warm or celebratory about the groom. His dark hair was perfectly styled, a faint shadow of stubble sharp against his strong jawline, and his dark eyes were impossibly cold. He was the undisputed head of the Blackwell syndicate, a man who built his empire on ruthlessness and absolute control.

While the rest of the ballroom was in a state of chaotic shock, Caleb stood in complete, chilling silence. He wasn't looking at his screaming fiancée. He wasn't looking at the ruined wedding cake that cost more than most people's homes. His piercing, dangerous gaze was locked entirely on the maid and the crying child. He was watching the scene unfold with the terrifying, calculating stillness of a predator analyzing its prey.

👉 Celeste thought she had the ultimate upper hand, but she was completely ignoring the silent monster watching from the shadows.
