Chapter 8 - The Shadow Steps Forward

The rhythmic, slow, and devastatingly heavy click of expensive leather shoes echoing against the marble floor silenced whatever pathetic screams were left in Celeste's throat.

From the shadows of the grand staircase, Caleb Blackwell finally moved.

He didn't rush. He didn't look angry. He moved with the terrifying, slow-motion grace of an apex predator closing in on a trapped animal. As he stepped fully into the bright light of the chandeliers, the entire atmosphere of the ballroom plunged to freezing.

The wealthy guests instinctively took steps backward, parting like the Red Sea to give the mafia boss a wide, completely unobstructed path. No one dared to make eye contact with him.

Caleb walked straight past the ruined cake, his polished shoes carefully avoiding the debris. He stopped exactly two feet in front of his trembling fiancée.

Up close, the dark, lethal energy radiating from the man was suffocating. He towered over Celeste, his broad shoulders blocking out the light. He slowly lowered his gaze, his dark, calculating eyes scanning her completely pale, panic-stricken face. He took note of her violently shaking hands, the sweat breaking through her expensive makeup, and the frantic, guilty rapid blinking of her eyes.

He didn't look at the cake. He didn't look at the guards. He just stared at the woman he was supposed to marry in less than a week.

"Caleb..." Celeste whimpered, her voice suddenly incredibly small. She reached out with a trembling hand, desperately trying to place her fingers against his chest, trying to play the victim one last time. "Darling, please, you have to do something. This... this child is ruining everything."

👉 Caleb was standing right in front of her, and the question he was about to ask would seal her fate forever.
