Chapter 18 - the dawn breaks

The next morning, the estate was cleaned up thoroughly, leaving not a single trace of the bloody battle from the night before. The fog dissipated, giving way to brilliant rays of dawn sunlight shining through the massive glass windows.

Elena stepped out of the safe room, pushing Don Vincenzo's wheelchair. The old man smiled kindly, his eyes radiating life. He held the young housekeeper's small hand, giving a slight nod in place of ten thousand words of deepest gratitude.

Alessandro was standing on the porch, smoking a cigar. When he saw Elena, he stubbed out the cigar and approached. The ruthless coldness from the night before had completely vanished, replaced by an unprecedentedly warm and sincere gaze.

"You didn't run away, even though you could have to save your own life," Alessandro said in a deep, warm voice. "Why did you choose to protect a crippled old man and the family of a cold-blooded mafia boss?"

Elena smiled gently, her eyes as clear as an autumn lake. "Because I saw the love hidden beneath your ruthless facade, Mr. Moretti. No one deserves to be abandoned."
