Chapter 3 - The Broken King

Alessandro bypassed Mrs. Gable completely, his heavy leather shoes clicking ominously against the marble floor.
He knelt down beside the young maid, bringing himself to eye-level with his father. The cinematic realism of the moment was agonizing. Vincenzo, a man who used to command armies of lethal enforcers, looked devastatingly hollow. His skin was pale, his cheeks were sunken, and his lips were severely cracked from severe dehydration.
But it was his eyes that shattered Alessandro’s heart.
When Vincenzo looked at his son, thick, heavy tears immediately welled up in his eyes. He let out a soft, frantic whimper, his slow eye movement darting terrified glances toward Mrs. Gable, who was still standing rigidly in the background.
"Dad," Alessandro whispered, his voice cracking with raw emotion. "Why are you shaking?"
Alessandro gently reached out and touched his father’s arm. Underneath the luxurious black robe with white piping, Vincenzo felt like nothing but skin and bone. Alessandro carefully rolled up the sleeve of the robe.
A collective, suffocating silence fell over the hallway.
Wrapped tightly around Vincenzo’s frail forearm was a massive, dark purple bruise, perfectly shaped like the harsh grip of a human hand.

👉 Mrs. Gable realized the evidence was exposed, and she was about to make a desperate, fatal mistake.
