Chapter 8 - The True Caretaker

The violent, chaotic energy finally evaporated from the grand luxury hallway.
Alessandro let out a slow, heavy breath, his broad shoulders dropping as the lethal executioner vanished. He turned his back on the service doors and walked slowly back to the center of the hallway.
He dropped to his knees on the hard marble floor, right next to Elena.
Alessandro reached out and gently took his father’s frail hands, kissing his knuckles with profound, devastating reverence. Vincenzo smiled, a weak, beautiful expression of absolute peace washing over his pale face.
Alessandro looked up at Elena. The young maid was standing quietly, her hands clasped respectfully in front of her white apron. She had risked her job, and potentially her life, to defend a paralyzed old man she barely knew.
"You saved his life today," Alessandro said, his deep voice thick with genuine, overwhelming gratitude. "Why did you stand up to her?"
"Because he is a human being, sir," Elena replied softly, her brown eyes filled with unwavering compassion. "And no one deserves to be treated like a burden."
