Chapter 1 - The Mirror on the Sidewalk

The upscale Chicago sidewalk was flooded with bright afternoon daylight. Pedestrians carrying expensive shopping bags hurried past luxury storefronts and beautiful flower planters.
Damien Moretti, the thirty-nine-year-old apex predator of the city's underworld, walked calmly toward his waiting armored black car. The towering, broad-shouldered mafia boss wore a fitted brown suit and an open white dress shirt that revealed dark, lethal syndicate tattoos on his collarbone. He held the tiny hand of his five-year-old daughter, Sophie.
Sophie was his entire universe. She wore an elegant cream-white party dress with a large ivory bow in her long chestnut curls, her fair skin glowing in the sunlight.
Suddenly, Sophie violently yanked her hand away.
She stopped hard in the middle of the crowded sidewalk, pointing her small finger directly toward the flower stand near the curb.
Damien turned sharply, his protective instincts instantly flaring. His hand drifted toward his concealed weapon, expecting an assassin.
But when his eyes followed her finger, the terrifying mafia boss completely froze in his tracks.
Sitting on the dirty concrete was a poor five-year-old girl holding a beige stuffed rabbit. She wore a faded dark-red dress and deeply worn shoes.
But it wasn't her clothes that stopped Damien’s heart.
The little girl had Sophie's exact face. The exact same gray eyes. The exact same chestnut curls, just messier and unbrushed. It wasn't a resemblance. It was a flawless, impossible duplication.

"Daddy..." Sophie whispered, her innocent voice trembling with absolute shock. "Am I looking in a mirror?"
👉 Damien stared at the impossible child, but the little girl's whispered response was about to completely shatter his reality.
