Chapter 1 - The Twelve-Dollar Firing

The Linden Room was one of Chicago’s most exclusive luxury restaurants. Sparkling crystal chandeliers cast a warm glow over pristine white tablecloths, and massive floor-to-ceiling windows offered a breathtaking view of the glittering city skyline.
But the atmosphere near the center of the dining room was completely suffocating.
"Take off your apron," Victoria, the forty-year-old manager wearing a sharp red suit, screamed at the top of her lungs. "You're fired!"
Sophie, a twenty-eight-year-old waitress wearing a black and white uniform, stood perfectly still. She didn't cry. She slowly, silently reached behind her back and unfastened the strings of her apron.
Sitting right beside them was Mrs. Ellis, an eighty-two-year-old woman with fragile white hair, wearing a worn but neat beige sweater. Tears spilled down Mrs. Ellis's deeply wrinkled cheeks as she watched the young waitress lose her livelihood in front of dozens of staring, wealthy diners.
"This is all my fault," Mrs. Ellis whispered, her frail hands trembling violently. "I'm so sorry."
Sophie ignored her screaming manager. She crouched down right beside the elderly woman’s chair, gently squeezing her frail shoulder.
"You have absolutely nothing to apologize for," Sophie said, her voice soft, kind, and completely steady.
Sophie dropped the apron onto the floor, grabbed her purse from the service station, and turned to walk out the front door.
As she walked toward the exit, she spotted a broad-shouldered man sitting completely alone at a dimly lit corner table. He had dark hair, an immaculate black suit, and an expensive silver watch. He was watching the entire scene with an intense, unreadable expression.
Sophie stopped. She glared at him.
"Enjoying the show?" Sophie asked bitterly.

The man sat perfectly still. "Was losing your job worth twelve dollars?" he asked in a deep, terrifyingly calm voice.
👉 Victoria rushed over to kick Sophie out, completely unaware of exactly who she was dealing with.
