Chapter 42 - the deadly standoff

Sophie peered through the shattered glass door. Lying unconscious on the floor were three heavily armed mercenaries. Standing over them, perfectly cloaked in the shadows, was Adrian. He lowered his weapon, his cold eyes softening for a fraction of a second as he looked at her.
"Are you hurt?" Adrian whispered, his voice incredibly steady.
"I'm perfectly fine, Boss," Sophie replied bravely, stepping out of the safe room. But before they could move toward the exit, the harsh, deafening crackle of the estate's intercom system echoed through the hallway. Kovac had bypassed the PA system.
"Adrian Voss," Kovac's arrogant, heavily accented voice filled the air. "I know you are here. I have forty innocent staff members wired with explosives on the roof. You will surrender to me in the main lobby, or I will detonate the charges. The choice is yours, ghost."

Adrian’s jaw locked into unyielding stone. He looked at Sophie, realizing that absolute stealth was no longer an option. The apex predator had to step directly into the light to save the innocent lives his director cared about. It was a deadly trap.
