Chapter 12 - understanding

Sarah stood by the windowsill, smiling as she watched the two of them playing in the yard. Her heart, which had closed off after her broken marriage and her ex-husband's bloody betrayal, was now beginning to flutter again.

She realized that safety didn't lie in high-rise buildings or massive fortunes. True safety lay in the sturdy arms of a man willing to sacrifice his very life for her and her child.

That evening, after Abby had fallen fast asleep, Sarah stepped out onto the porch, where Vance was sitting quietly gazing at the stars. She brought two hot cups of tea, gently sitting down beside the warrior.

"Are you always this restless?" Sarah spoke in a warm voice, handing him a cup of tea. Vance took it, his deep black eyes reflecting a rare sense of peace. "Just a habit from my days in the military."

Sarah lightly touched the long scar on his cheek, a scar that had once been labeled criminal was now proof of extraordinary bravery. "Thank you, Vance. Thank you for not abandoning us."
