Chapter 14 - the affirmation

When she discovered Vance was preparing to leave in the night, Sarah immediately rushed outside, blocking the front of his pickup truck. Tears streamed down her face, but her eyes burned brightly with an unshakable resolve.
"Are you planning to run away?" Sarah yelled, her voice choking. "You faced off against an entire gang of cold-blooded hitmen to save us, and now you're surrendering to the meaningless gossip of strangers?"
Vance stepped out of the truck, his face clearly showing his inner turmoil. "I just don't want Abby to have to live with ridicule. The kid deserves a more perfect father, not a guy covered in scars."
Sarah lunged forward to embrace him tightly, burying her head against his broad chest. "Your scars are medals of bravery. Abby loves you, and so do I. Don't let people who don't understand us destroy this family."
From inside the house, little Abby came running out, clinging tightly to Vance's leg. She held her familiar red marker in her hand. "Don't go, Uncle Vance! I'll draw lots and lots of hearts on you to cover up the wounds!"
