Chapter 2 - The Tattooed Protector

At the defense table stood Mr. Vance.
The forty-something rugged, muscular man with short hair, a thick beard, and heavy tattoos crawling up his neck and arms stood completely rigid. He wore a grey denim vest over a plain black tank top, looking entirely out of place in a formal courtroom. A long, jagged white scar ran jaggedly down his left cheek—a permanent mark from a violent past that the prosecutor had spent all morning using to terrify the jury.
As little Abby marched straight toward him, Vance’s fierce, intimidating expression instantly melted into absolute terror.
"Stay back, kid," Vance muttered, his voice a deep, gravelly warning. He instinctively backed away, terrified that his presence alone would frighten her.
A police officer in a dark blue uniform rushed forward, putting a heavy hand on Vance’s chest to hold him back, assuming the criminal was about to lash out.
"Don't grab her," Vance whispered, his voice dark, protective, and trembling with an emotion the courtroom had not expected. He glared at the officer, his eyes wide. "Keep your hands where I can see them. Don't scare her."

Abby completely ignored the police officer. She stopped right in front of the towering, tattooed man, looking up at him with immense, unshakeable trust.
👉 The courtroom held its collective breath as the little girl raised her small hand toward the dangerous convict's face.
