Chapter 5 - The Judge's Inquiry

High above the courtroom, sitting at his elevated wooden bench, the older judge with distinguished grey hair and a black robe leaned heavily forward.
He rested his folded hands on the mahogany ledge, his eyes softening as he looked down at the four-year-old girl standing beside her anxious mother. He had presided over hundreds of custody and criminal cases, but he had never seen anything quite like this.
"Abby," the judge said, his voice deep, serious, and questioning, cutting through the heavy tension of the room. "Look at me, sweetheart."
Abby turned her head, staring up at the judge with wide, unblinking eyes.
"Are you saying Mr. Vance did not kidnap you?" the judge asked gently, giving her the floor to speak the unvarnished truth.
Sarah’s breath hitched. She tightened her grip on Abby’s shoulders, her heart hammering against her ribs.
The prosecutor held his breath, waiting for the child to revert to the coached narrative the state had fed her.
