Chapter 18 - the mysterious neighbor
A few days later, a middle-aged man with a friendly smile moved into the house opposite the Vance family. He introduced himself as Greg, an insurance salesman transferred from the big city.
Greg frequently acted enthusiastic, bringing homemade baked goods over for Sarah and trying to strike up a conversation with Abby whenever she came home from school. On the surface, he seemed like the absolute perfect neighbor.
But Vance never lost the sharp survival instincts of a man who had been through life and death. Even though Greg disguised himself very cleverly, Vance still noticed the calluses on his index finger, characteristic of someone used to holding a gun.
Furthermore, the security camera system Vance had installed himself around the house recorded Greg standing on his porch, stealthily observing their family's daily routine at dawn when no one was paying attention.
Vance didn't tell Sarah to avoid scaring her. He silently double-checked all the weapons hidden in the garage and changed the locks. He knew that the truly devastating storm was slowly approaching.
