Chapter 6 - The Ultimate Truth

Abby looked up directly, her expression entirely serious, calm, and resolute. There was no fear in her voice.
"He didn't take me," Abby said clearly and confidently.
The prosecutor slumped back into his chair, his case completely dead.
"Explain to the court what happened that night, Abby," Vance’s defense attorney prompted gently, stepping forward.
Abby pointed a small finger at Vance. "The bad men in black masks broke into our house. They grabbed Mommy and me. They had big guns. Mr. Vance was walking past our yard. He jumped through the window. He fought the bad men so we could run away. He got cut with a knife right here," she touched her own cheek, mimicking the scar, "protecting us."
The courtroom doors at the back suddenly swung open. Two federal marshals marched down the aisle, dragging the lead prosecutor’s star witness—Sarah’s wealthy, corrupt ex-husband—in cuffs. A taped confession had just been recovered, proving the ex-husband had staged the "kidnapping" charge to frame Vance and strip Sarah of custody.
Vance looked across the courtroom, his eyes meeting Sarah’s. The silent, mutual understanding between them was absolute. He had taken the fall and stayed silent to protect them from the cartel hitmen hunting him, refusing to let Sarah and Abby get caught in the crossfire.
The judge banged his gavel one final time.

"Case dismissed. Mr. Vance is released immediately."
If you were Sarah, would you have trusted a tattooed stranger with a violent past to protect your child, or would you have run away in terror?
