Chapter 13 - the clouds

The affection between Sarah and Vance gradually blossomed naturally and deeply. However, Vance's complex past was sometimes still a hazy cloud obscuring the completeness of their family's happiness.
One morning, when Vance dropped Abby off at preschool, a few other parents looked at him with scrutinizing and apprehensive eyes. The labyrinth of tattoos on his arms made them feel uneasy.
They whispered and gossiped about his prison past, even though he had been completely exonerated. Those malicious whispers inadvertently reached little Abby's ears. That afternoon, the little girl returned home looking incredibly sad.
"Mommy, why do my friends say Uncle Vance is a bad person?" Abby sobbed in Sarah's arms. The mother's heart clenched in pain. She didn't want her daughter to be hurt by the bitter gossip of others.
Vance stood outside the door, hearing everything. An indescribable sadness rose in his chest. He knew that his presence would always bring trouble for the mother and daughter. He quietly turned and walked into the shadows.
